Real-Time Resource Reservation for Synchronized Multimedia Object over Wireless LAN

The increasing use of wireless networks has necessitated the development of a wireless networking infrastructure that supports quality of service (QoS) for multimedia communications. Proxy servers are gaining prominence in facilitating QoS assurance and intelligent resource allocation for multimedia services. In this paper, we propose a proxy-based framework that provides QoS support to mobile ...

Optimizing Continuous Media Delivery by Multiple Distributed Servers to Multiple Clients using a Genetic Algorithm

In this paper we explore the potential of a VoD system that is based on a paradigm that has been recently proposed: that of combining many distributed servers to handle the delivery of each requested media. When faced with a system comprised of N servers and M clients, the problems to be addressed are: (i) how to split the delivery task among different servers and (ii) how to pair clients and s...

Improving Server Utilization in a Distributed Computing Set-up with Independent Clients

We consider a set-up in which there are multiple servers and multiple clients in a large distributed computing system. Clients request servers to process jobs. Servers can only process one job in unit time. There is no coordinating agent to route client requests to servers, and clients choose servers independently and simultaneously, and only have access to the outcomes of their own past reques...

Controlling Concurrency in Mobile Computing Environments with Broadcast-Based Data Dissemination

A wireless broadcast environment is defined as a mobile computing environment in which data are delivered to mobile clients by means of a broadcast-based mechanism. Of course, those applications have to see the most recent consistent database state. For that reason, in such a scenario, database servers should synchronize operations for ensuring data consistency and currency of data. However, co...

Survivable Consensus Objects

Reaching consensus among multiple processes in a distributed system is fundamental to coordinating distributed actions. In this paper we present a new approach to building survivable consensus objects in a system consisting of a (possibly large) collection of persistent object servers and a transient population of clients. Our consensus object implementation requires minimal support from server...
